Sydney, 1st of July
ChangeCamp is about grassroots social change, active citizenship and do-ocracy.
ChangeCamp is for people and organisations who want to make a difference in their community. It’s about community driven social change, active citizenship and collaboration for social impact.
Anyone can host a session at ChangeCamp. It’s an unconference with some creative facilitation and an opening session designed to inspire, build community and help you to maximise your impact. The rest of the day is up to you!
We hope to learn more about the people and organisations doing good things for our community, and we’ll bring collaboration specialists, government agencies who want to help.
Our first ChangeCampAU was held in Sydney on the 1st July, 2017 and we couldn’t be more pleased with the impact it had! Watch this space, and Get in touch if you want to get involved.
ChangeCamp is created by you for you, and we want to help you maximise the impact of your work by connecting you to others who will support it. So we’d like to hear how you are currently contributing to your community or how you want to contribute to it, and the kind of help you need. This includes your initiatives, ideas and the challenges you’d like to solve.
Why not host a session? We’d love to hear about:
We look forward to co-creating an amazing day with you all!
Changecamp is an unconference for social outcomes in Sydney. It is a day-long event for people who are working on and want to learn more about how to best contribute to community development and deliver social outcomes in our city.
ChangeCampAU was inspired by the ChangeCampCA in Canada.
ChangeCampAU is an unconference with some creative facilitation designed to make sure you get the most out of day.
At an unconference, participants are the speakers. The agenda is set in the opening session of the day using open space facilitation techniques.
They are called camps because everyone participates, suggesting topics to talk about and hosting discussions.
With the help of the ChangeCampCA team, we’re building on the concept, taking the good bits and adding some things to help make ChangeCampAU have the biggest impact we can.
Unconferences are participatory events where facilitators use open space techniques at the start of the day to create the agenda with participants. The event is coordinted and the format structured by organisers but the topics discussed and content of sessions within it created are agreed by participants.
Anyone who wants to initiate a session can suggest a topic for discussion. Rather than having a single speaker at the front of the room giving a talk, these sessions are interactive. Attendees and organisers are encouraged to become participants, with session hosts providing prompts for discussion and facilitating the session format for participants.
We want to create a constellation of change agents to increase the effectiveness of people and organisations working to deliver social outcomes across Sydney. ChangeCamp is a deliberate first step in that direction.
ChangeCamp is about social change. It’s about local, grassroots action by people in their communities. Citizens who participate, create community and support each other.
Anyone can suggest a topic to talk about. We’d like to hear about how you are, or want to, contribute to your community and the kind of help you think you might need. Your initiatives, ideas and the challenges you’d like to help solve in your community.
You’ll also hear from the collaboration for impact team and we’re inviting crowdfunding, service design, community engagement, and sustainability specialists to participate.
We are inviting people from government, the NGO sector, businesses and regular citizens who want to, or who already are, actively using their skills – software development, design thinking, writing, social media, etc – to support effective social change in Greater Sydney.
To meet others who care about what you do, and can you make a difference in your community.
We’re also inviting collaboration specialists and social outcomes specialists who can help you maximise your impact, and government teams who want to help activate communities and support community driven social impact.
$41 to cover the cost of catering only. This includes a light breakfast, morning tea, lunch and a light afternoon nibble. All food is being provided by Parliament on King, a social enterprise that employs refugees in Sydney.
ChangeCamp Sydney was first held on 1st July, 2017 at UTS School of Business. Future dates are yet to be released.
Amelia participated in a ChangeCamp in Vancouver in 2009, spoke at BarCamp Canberra in 2011 and facilitated GovcampQLD in 2012.
We’ve debriefed with participants and organisers of these events and compiled all the good bits together to re-design ChangeCampAU to maximise it’s impact.
Amelia first brought ChangeCamp to Australia in 2017. It was a goal for her after she participated in ChangeCampVancouver in 2009. We’ve watched ChangeCampVancouver 2010, 2011, 2013 and ChangeCampVictoria 2014 online and were inspired by their success and the sessions hosted by participants. Check them out!
We’d like to thank the ChangeCampCA team for this inspiration and their support, especially Colleen and Lee who have openly shared their resources and have helped guide engage2 in the design of ChangeCampAU.
Participate. Register and suggest a topic for discussion / a session you’d like to host on the day.
We are inviting people to share an initiative, pose a challenge and talk through their ideas for how they want to address it, or to share their tips working for social change and how you can be more effective.
Want to do more? Volunteer. We’ll need some help on the day.
Bring something to offer At the end of the day, we will host an ASK and GIVE session. We’re hoping this session helps participants maximise their impact, and would love to see some cross-sector collaborations. If you are a business, you might want to offer mentoring, office or meeting spaces; if you’re a government agency trying to activate community or deliver outcomes, this is your chance to help us help each other.
Because we are ‘doers’ and we see a need.
We believe in smart, resilient and sustainable cities are built on strong communities. We’ve been engaging community for years: listening, trying to understand; and helping governments to open up and consider the need, ideas and interests of citizens and stakeholders.
Through this work, we’ve met so many people and organisations across Sydney who are and want to help address challenges facing our communities. We know that neither they, nor government, can do it all and we want to help them work together so we can all be more effective.
We also do a lot of volunteer work helping to activate, develop and build capabilities in communities; and we think it’s time to connect our worlds, to leverage the goodwill and social capital in our communities better.
We’ve been trying to help open government for years and it’s making a difference, but open government isn’t just about open data and government delivering everything for us. It’s about working WITH us.
Governments are now engaging people and organisations for user research and the co-design of services they can deliver to us, but there’s only so much they can do and pay for with our taxes.
Participatory democracy and open government isn’t just about voting or consultation, it’s about engagement that encourages people and organisations to contribute and governments that enable active citizenship.
We want to help governments leverage the goodwill and social capital in our communities. We’re also hearing a lot about smart, sustainable resilient cities – we like it, but think it’s time to acknowledge the importance of people, relationships and prioritise the development of communities in our cities.
We want to focus on local impact. Community based social action.
Sydney was our first Changecamp but we’d love to share what we learned and work with other communities who think they could benefit from a ChangeCamp. Let us know you’re interested and we’ll let you know how it goes.
We’d like to thank the ChangeCampCA team for their inspiration and support and the organisations in Sydney that believe in us and YOU enough to be helping us bring ChangeCamp to Sydney.
